Jim Rooney - I was very saddened to learn of the death of Duane Eddy. I was introduced to Duane by the late Denny Purcell, a master mastering engineer in Nashville. Denny talked me up to Duane, and Duane very kindly said that if I ever thought of anything I could use him on to give him a call. Some time later that year I was working on an album with the dynamic Cowboy poet Paul Zarzyski. One of Paul's poems, "Monte Carlo Express" described Paul driving his vintage Monte Carlo at breakneck speed over the twisting Montana roads, steering the car with his knees while opening his mail! I thought of Duane right away and called him up. Duane listened to the cassette I sent over and called right back. He loved it and another one called "Bucking Horse Moon" about young rodeo cowboy romance, this time in a Buick! It was all live when we recorded. I had invited Larry Atamanuik to join us on drums. He had played with Peter Rowan in Seatrain and other configurations and was used to responding to the moment. Paul was dancing around the microphone like a boxer, with Duane responding to every twist and turn of the wild Monte Carlo ride and then providing the perfect atmospheric sonic backdrop to the young rodeo lovers. We were in the presence of a master. A gentle giant if there ever was one. I will never forget his generosity and his kindness. Here's to a life well lived--to Duane Eddy. | FacebookI was very saddened to learn of the death of Duane Eddy.
